How Many Arcade Machines Fit in a 40HQ Container? Real Loading Records and the Arithmetic Behind Them

Table of Contents

TL;DR

A 40HQ holds about 76 m³ inside. One of our shipments put 39 claw machines into a single 40HQ, which works out to roughly 1.95 m³ of container space per packed machine, bracing included. Mixed loads behave differently: two 40HQ containers of boxing machines, air hockey tables, claw machines and kiddie rides went to Mexico in the same year, and the same volume carried far fewer units. So how many arcade machines fit in a 40HQ container has an honest answer only as a range. Measure the packed volume of your own machines, apply the formula in section 3, and you will land within about 10% of the real figure.

1. What the Loading Records Show About How Many Arcade Machines Fit in a 40HQ Container

Two shipments from our own production set a realistic range. Both went by sea, both were packed and braced in the factory before the container was sealed.

One Type of Machine Gives the Cleanest Number

The Dubai shipment is the useful one for planning. A single model family, one container, one destination. Thirty-nine claw machines in a 40HQ gives a benchmark you can reason from: about 1.95 m³ of container space per machine, including the timber bracing and the space needed to work inside the box.

Mixed Loads Give a Lower Count

The Mexico shipment carried four categories in two containers. Boxing machines and air hockey tables occupy far more floor area than a claw machine, and kiddie rides do not stack. Fewer units per container is normal for a mixed load, and that is not a packing failure. It is geometry.

2. Why the Number Varies So Much

Three factors move the count more than anything else.

Machine Footprint and Packed Volume

What matters is not the machine’s footprint on the floor. It is the volume of the packed unit, crate included. A cabinet that occupies 0.8 m² on the floor can still eat 1.8 m³ once it is wrapped, braced and given working clearance.

Crating and Bracing

Export packing is not wrapping film alone. Timber bracing, corner protection and strapping all consume volume. Good bracing costs 5 to 10% of the container and saves machines from arriving cracked, so it is not the place to economise.

Partial Disassembly

Marquees, control panels and legs are the usual items removed before packing. Removing them can recover meaningful volume. Do not assume a fixed saving, though. Measure the packed unit before and after, because the gain depends entirely on how the cabinet is built.

3. The Arithmetic: Sizing Your Own Load

You do not need a loading diagram to get close. One formula covers how many arcade machines fit in a 40HQ container.

The Formula

Units per 40HQ = (76 × 0.9) ÷ packed volume per unit

The 76 is the internal volume of a 40HQ in cubic metres. The 0.9 is the share you can actually use after bracing, aisle clearance and the uneven shape of real cargo. Divide by the packed volume of one unit, in cubic metres.

For a 20GP, substitute 33 for 76. The rest is identical.

A Worked Example From the Dubai Shipment

Thirty-nine claw machines filled one 40HQ.

  • Usable volume: 76 × 0.9 = 68.4 m³
  • Volume per machine: 68.4 ÷ 39 = 1.75 m³
  • Check the other way: 39 × 1.75 = 68.3 m³, which fits the usable volume

That 1.75 m³ is the packed volume of one claw machine, crate included. If your own machine measures 1.2 m × 0.8 m × 1.8 m packed, the volume is 1.73 m³, and you land on the same 39 units. This is why the arithmetic is worth doing before you ask for a quote.

4. What Actually Limits a 40HQ Arcade Machine Load

Volume usually runs out long before weight does. That single fact decides how many arcade machines fit in a 40HQ container.

Volume Binds First

Most arcade machines are bulky but light. Take an average packed weight of 150 kg: 39 units total about 5.9 tonnes, against a payload near 26 tonnes for a 40HQ. You fill the box with air, not with steel.

The exception is dense equipment. Air hockey tables, boxing machines and anything with a large steel frame gets closer to the weight limit, and those are exactly the categories that need a loading plan rather than a guess.

Axle Load and Road Limits

A container that is legal at sea can still be illegal on the road. Destination countries cap axle weight, and a container packed front-heavy can exceed a limit even when the total is fine. Ask the forwarder about road limits before the truck arrives, not after.

5. 20GP, 40GP or 40HQ: Which Box Suits Your Order

Before you ask how many arcade machines fit in a 40HQ container, check whether you need a 40HQ at all. The three common boxes differ in volume far more than in price.

ContainerInternal volumeApprox. claw machinesSuits
20GPabout 33 m³around 17A trial order or a first container
40GPabout 67 m³around 34Standard cabinets, lower freight than a high cube
40HQabout 76 m³around 39Tall cabinets, kiddie rides, maximum volume

When the High Cube Is Worth It

A 40HQ adds roughly 30 cm of internal height over a 40GP. That matters for kiddie rides, tall racing cabinets and anything that cannot be laid on its side. If your tallest packed unit exceeds the internal height of a standard box, the choice is already made for you.

When the 20GP Wins

For a first order, a 20GP is often the better commercial decision. You test the market with 17 machines instead of 39, you tie up less capital, and you learn what sells before committing to a full container. The freight per unit is higher, but the risk is far lower.

6. Five Decisions That Change the Count

Packing Method

Crated units stack. Bare cabinets do not, and should never be stacked on acrylic or glass. The packing method alone can move the count by a third.

Machine Mix

One model family loads efficiently. Four categories load like the Mexico shipment, with gaps that cannot always be filled by another category.

Accessories and Spares

Coin boxes, power supplies, spare buttons and cables fill voids that machines cannot. Plan them as filler, not as an afterthought.

Manuals and Labels

Destination-language manuals and safety labels ship with the machines. They weigh nothing and are easy to forget, and a machine without them is not sellable at the destination.

Loading Sequence

Heavy categories go low and centre. Light claw machines go high and to the doors only if the crate is rated for it. Loading sequence is a safety decision before it is a volume decision.

7. FAQ

How many claw machines fit in a 40HQ container?

In our February 2023 shipment, 39 claw machines filled one 40HQ. That equals about 1.95 m³ of container space per machine once bracing is included, or roughly 1.75 m³ of packed volume per unit. Your figure will move with cabinet size and crate design.

How many arcade machines fit in a 20GP container?

About 33 m³ of internal volume, so expect roughly 40% of the 40HQ count. At the same packed volume, that is around 17 claw machines. Mixed categories will be fewer.

Can arcade machines be stacked in a container?

Crated units can be stacked when the crate is rated for it. Bare cabinets should not be stacked, and no cabinet should carry weight on its acrylic panel or marquee. Stacking decisions belong to the packing plan, not to the loader on the day.

Does disassembling machines increase the count?

It can. Marquees, control panels and legs are the usual removals, and they recover volume on most cabinet designs. Measure the packed unit before and after, because the gain varies by model and is easy to overestimate.

Why did the Mexico shipment carry fewer units per container?

It carried boxing machines, air hockey tables, claw machines and kiddie rides. Those categories have larger footprints and lower stackability than a uniform claw machine load. Mixed containers trade unit count for product range.

How long does loading a 40HQ take?

Packing and bracing a full container is normally a multi-day job at the factory once the machines are finished, packed and documented. Ask for the loading date and the sealing photos, because those are the records that matter if cargo arrives damaged.

8. Bottom Line

How many arcade machines fit in a 40HQ container is a question about packed volume, not about machine count. Start from 76 m³, keep 10% for bracing and access, and divide by the packed volume of your own unit. The Dubai shipment gives you a benchmark of 39 claw machines. Use it to sanity-check your own arithmetic, then confirm the loading plan with your supplier.

Next Step

Send the machine list with packed dimensions, or just the model numbers. We will return a loading plan with the unit count per 40HQ, the bracing method and the container cost, before you commit to a deposit.
